Google My Maps

Import layers from a publicly-shared Google My Maps map

Connect a Google My Maps map to Atlas by pasting its share URL. Atlas reads the layers in the map and lets you import any of them as Atlas datasets — useful when you've already collected places, polygons, or routes in Google My Maps and want to bring them into a richer GIS workflow.

Make the map public first

Atlas can only read maps shared with Anyone with the link. To prepare a map:

  1. Open the map in Google My Maps.
  2. Click Share.
  3. Set link sharing to Anyone with the link.
  4. Copy the share URL.

A typical URL looks like https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=....

Connect the map

  1. In Atlas, click Add data in the Layers panel.
  2. Go to the Connections tab.
  3. Select Google My Maps.
  4. Paste the Google My Maps URL into the input.
  5. Continue to fetch the map.

Atlas pulls the list of layers in the map.

Pick layers to import

After connecting, Atlas shows the layers contained in the map. Use the search box to filter long lists, then select the layers you want to import. Each selected layer is imported as a separate Atlas dataset.

What gets imported

Each Google My Maps layer becomes an Atlas vector dataset:

  • Points — places marked on the map.
  • Lines — directions and custom lines.
  • Polygons — drawn areas.

Per-feature attributes (titles, descriptions, photos referenced by URL, custom fields) are preserved as dataset columns.

Limits and notes

  • The map must be set to Anyone with the link. Private maps or those shared only with specific people can't be read.
  • Imports are one-shot — Google My Maps changes don't sync back automatically. Re-import to refresh.
  • Embedded photos and styles inside Google My Maps don't translate exactly; restyle layers in Atlas to control colour, sizing, and labels.
  • Large maps with many layers may take a few seconds to enumerate.
